Who Is Woody?
Woody's Story...
When Woody came to India in the 70's, the only bread available there, was the soft white toastbread, a legacy of the British.
Woody, like most Germans (you can say, like most Westeners) was missing a good brown bread very much! So he simply started to try to bake some for himself, the first one he did in Afganistan in 1971 in a simple claypot on a kerosene stove, and it came out delicious!
So Woody travelled around, baking bread for himself and friends here and there , not realizing the big business potential which would lay in this product.
It was only in Goa ,around 1975, that some friends pushed him, to try to sell his bread there on the flea market . And of course, it was a big success ! From that day on, Woody did not have to worry about his future stay in India, he found something great not only to live on, but also to give something to the travelers , which in future would give him many admirers, fans.
Woody became a legend, his bread a big success story. The problem was, wherever he baked his breads, soon there were some Nepalis, who did a copy of it, which of course forced him, to keep his price low. So Woody decided, that he should start a real bakery, also with rolls, cakes, good café, juices etc His first bakery in Kathmandu, Pumpernickel bakery, still exists, but Woody was kicked out by his partner after 1 year, the moment it started to make profit.
It was only in 1990, that Woody got his chance for something big . The German Bakery in Pune became a great success, maybe it was India's first health-food restaurant . But Woody did not like to live in a city, so he founded a company, bought some land in Anjuna (Goa) and started the German Bakery ,a beautiful health food garden restaurant , a dream had come through.
The German bakery become famous for his good food and nice atmosphere.
It was gradually taken over by Pankaj, who is actually from the Himalayas, who gave to it that modern trendy touch, which old-fashioned Woody could not . Pankaj is running the place with his good energy, and Woody has retired to the Himalayas, where he is producing organic healthfood, like muesli, muesli bars, porridge and grainflakes etc.
Of course, there were many german bakeries started all over India, using Woodys reciepes and ideas, some good, some bad, but they could never match the original!
